Chang turned pro in 1988 and was the first American since Tony Trabert in 1955 to win the French Open in 1989 where he defeated Ivan Lendl in a riveting finals. He was the youngest male in history to win a Grand Slam title, at 17 years 3 months. He was the youngest male to win a match at the U.S. Open, 15 years 6 months. His career highest ranking was No. 2 in 1996 and was the winner of 34 singles titles on tour.
Michael retired from competitive tennis in 2003 and in 2008 married tennis player Amber Liu. Michael and his family established the Chang Family Foundation in 1999, which implements local and international Christian youth programs. In 2008 he was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, RI.
